Dr. Lorne Everett Receives ASCE Life Member Award

Dr. Lorne Everett was awarded Life Member status by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) on March 7, 2020. A Life Member is an individual who has made a lifetime commitment to ASCE and the civil engineering profession by remaining a member for the full length of his or her professional career. Among other criteria, the designation occurs when a professional has been an ASCE member for at least 35 years and has 10 years of continuous membership prior to the award. Dr Everett joined ASCE in 1974 and was awarded the high status of Fellow in January 2011. At the induction ceremony, it was noted that Dr Everett’s most gratifying position was as Manager of General Electric’s Centre for Advanced Studies Water Resources program. His most significant career achievement was Chancellor of Lakehead University from 2000-2009. It was noted that his most significant lifetime achievement is Chairman of the World Federation of Scientists Panel on Pollution located at CERN, Geneva that holds annual meetings in Italy. Over years, the meetings have been attended by more than a hundred and twenty Nobel Laureates to address planetary emergencies ranging from pollution to nuclear holocaust.

Dr. Lorne Everett was invited by the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) to be the Keynote speaker for the ACWA Region 5 Annual Meeting at the Glen Annie Golf Club in Goleta, California on September 17, 2017. The title of Lorne's presentation was "Recycled Water and Water Reuse." Lorne stressed the need to understand the flow and sampling of waste applications to land in the solid and liquid form. He also noted the risks faced by water agencies from emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, 1,2,3-trichloropropane (1,2,3-TCP), chlorinated volatile organic compounds, and glyphosate - the main ingredient in the widely used herbicide, Roundup.

California Sets Drinking Water Standard for 1,2,3-TCP

Dr. Lorne G. Everett presented a proposal to create a World Water Crisis Centre to the World Federation of Scientists on August 23, 2016 at the San Domenico Monastery in Erice, Italy. The proposal is part of the New Manhattan Project sponsored by the World Federation of Scientists located at CERN Geneva. The proposal is co-sponsored by the UNESCO International Hydrological Program in Paris, the Russian Academy of Sciences Water Problems Institute in Moscow, and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The initial 5-year program will be funded by seed money from the World Federation of Scientists. The World Economic Forum whose membership includes heads of state, CEOs, and civic leaders, ranked water crises as the top global risk to industry and society over the next decade. Dr. Everett is the Chairman of the World Federation of Scientists Panel on Pollution.
