LEA Environmental Selected for Puerto Rico PFAS Project

By LEA Environmental, Inc. on Oct 07, 2022 at 04:53 PM in LEA Announcements

Hydrologists, engineers and hydrogeologists with LEA Environmental, Inc. are assisting the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in its island-wide assessment of PFAS impacts to groundwater and surface water resources.

PFAS are a group of manufactured chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s largely for stain and water resistance. There are hundreds if not thousands of different PFAS compounds.

Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) are two of the most widely used and studied chemicals in the PFAS group. In August 2022, EPA issued a proposal to designate these two compounds as hazardous substances under CERCLA, or Superfund. EPA recently set drinking water health advisories for PFOS and PFOA at 70 nanograms per liter (ng/L). These new parts-per-trillion (ppt) health advisory levels are orders-of-magnitude lower than regulatory levels for any other drinking water contaminant, highlighting the extreme toxicity and persistence of these chemicals which are now ubiquitous in the environment.
